Gyotaku Fish Print

Welcome to the art of Gyotaku by Capt. Don Regar, Jr.

The art of Gyotaku fish printing ("Gyo" = fish, and "taku" = impression — the Japanese Art of Fish Printing) is a Japanese art form that dates back to the mid to late 1800's and was originally used to record the exact size, form and features of a fish for future identification. It was also used as a way for fishermen to preserve their trophy long after consumption. However, in recent years it has become more of a decorative art form for anglers to show their catch.

As an avid fisherman and artist, gyotaku allows me to combine my love for both into something unique and creative. It also helps keep an accurate record of some of the amazing fish we have caught. The creation of a Gyotaku impression captures the exact characteristics of the fish, and preserves that moment in life size proportions. Each gyotaku fish print is unique, original, and intrinsically beautiful. Every print has a story...
